The new owners may have done renovations to the home since then, but from the outside, it looks the same. The filmmakers rented the family an apartment to stay in while they worked, but the family decided to return home after a few nights. They kept to the master suite on the second floor while the film crew worked downstairs, allowing the family to periodically interact with Macaulay Culkin and the other cast members. At the time of filming, the Abendshien family lived in the Winnetka house.

Gone are the days of green and red wallpaper and red carpeting on the stairs in the foyer – now replaced with modern grey paint and blue & white carpeting. The kitchen has also undergone some extensive work, now featuring elegant white shaker cabinets, green tile backsplash, and a small breakfast bar. The tacky wallpaper in the master suite has been replaced with a chic grey & white striped print. Additionally, the once hardwood floors are now decked out in white carpeting. The dining room, which featured red walls in the film, is now adorned in a warm cream color painted with vines and pear trees. Quite the improvement overall…unless you’re a diehard lover of 90s interior design.

The film takes place in the fictional town of Shermer, Illinois. Ferris Bueller from Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Samantha Baker from Sixteen Candles and John Bender and all his detention mates from Breakfast Club. Hughes returned time and time again to the North Shore area of Illinois for his films; he thought of all his characters as living in the same universe, but Shermer was special. In December 2021,Airbnb listed a one-night stay in the actual Home Alone house. According to the listing, Kevin's big brother Buzz—whose role in Disney+'s Home Sweet Home Alone remake found him growing up and becoming a security expert—will serve as your "host."

Peter Beaupre, Alice Ribbons, Burton Jernigan, and Earl Unger are four internationally wanted criminals who work for a terrorist organization. In Silicon Valley, California, they steal a $10 million missile-cloaking microchip and hide it inside a remote control toy car to sneak it past security at San Francisco International Airport. However, a luggage mix-up causes a Chicago-bound elderly passenger named Mrs. Hess to inadvertently take the thieves' bag containing the car. The four thieves arrive in Chicago and systematically search every house in Mrs. Hess's suburban neighborhood to find the chip. The Home Alone script was written by iconic '80s filmmaker John Hughes, who set most of his movies in Chicago and its North Shore suburbs.

The Real-Life Home Alone House: Then and Now

Taking matters into his own hands, Kevin sets up booby traps for Marv and Vera. The next morning, the duo head to the house after Peter and Natalie go to pick up the royals. Kevin tricks and locks Mr. Prescott in the basement, but eventually discovers Marv and Vera's real ally is Molly, who is also Marv's mother. After several failed attempts to call Kate, Kevin escapes via the house's dumbwaiter and temporarily traps Marv underneath it. Marv and Vera pursue Kevin through the house, where they spring the traps and suffer various injuries, while Molly gets trapped in the house's elevator.

Eight-year-old Alex Pruitt is given the remote control car by Mrs. Hess for shoveling her driveway. He returns home and discovers that he has chickenpox and must stay out of school. The next day, Alex discovers the thieves while spying on his neighbors. After two failed attempts to have them apprehended, Alex attaches a camera to the remote control car and uses it to spy on them, leading to the thieves chasing it when they spot it. Wondering what they want with the toy car, Alex opens it and discovers the stolen chip.

And since we’ve already covered the house in the first Home Alone movie, we thought I’d be the perfect time to do some scouting and find the one in the third movie too, especially since it’s no less beautiful. Clare Carey as Kate McCallister, Kevin, Buzz, and Megan's mother. French Stewart as Marv Murchins, Vera's husband and an old nemesis of Kevin. Despite his name, the character's physical appearance and attire more closely resemble that of his former partner Harry Lyme . After the three initially refuse, Kevin accepts the offer after being bullied by Buzz and revels in the mansion's luxuries.

Just in case you were wondering, the house where Alex Pruitt’s neighbor — Mrs. Hess — supposedly lived is actually located across the street at 3025 Normandy Place. And while the first two Home Alone movies starring Macaulay Culkin are the clear fan favorites, the third one was deemed the least successful in the series — by far — and failed to make a lasting impression.

Whereas Home Alone 3 featured a standalone plot and new characters, this film brings back several of the main characters from the first two films, including Kevin McCallister, but with all of the roles played by different actors. The plot revolves around Kevin McCallister trying to defend his future stepmother's house from his old nemesis Marv and his sidekick/wife Vera. It was the last film that Rod Daniel directed before his subsequent retirement (partly due to his diagnosis from Parkinson's disease, complications of which resulted in his death in 2016). With the help of recruits Alice Ribbons, Earl Unger, and Burton Jernigan, Beaupre manages to acquire the chip from a contact in Silicon Valley. Home Alone 3 steers clear of the mistakes of the previous films, and makes all new ones.

The criminals follow Mrs. Hess to Chicago, where they later realize that Alex Pruitt has the car. The mob boss calls Beaupre and tells him if he doesn't have the chip in 24 hours, the mission will be terminated. The mob boss doesn't appear again and it's unknown if he was arrested or not. Gosh, this is real bad, only watched it because of Lenny Von Dohlen. The choice of songs were bad, acting was bad, plot was bad, script was bad, camera work was bad, trap design was bad, actors looked bad.

Marv and Vera run back into the house and pursue Kevin, who accidentally ruins the party by running into the guests and knocking over an ice sculpture that turns out to be a frozen Mr. Prescott. Angered, Peter sends Kevin to his room, refusing to believe his story and accusing him of trying to sabotage his relationship with Natalie, who threatens to evict him if he misbehaves again. There are few, if any, holiday movie homes more iconic than the one featured in the Christmas-time classic "Home Alone." However, the Winnetka house wasn’t big enough to use for all the interiors.

“It was far too smallto get the crew in the door," Columbus once explained. Instead, many of the interiors of Kevin’s home were shot at New Trier Township High School, an abandoned school in town. The filmmakers built a two-story set inside the gym. For movie fans, the brick suburban residence featured in the 1990 movie Home Alone is almost as familiar as Macaulay Culkin's adorable mug from the beloved holiday flick. The entire production of Home Alone was shot in the Chicago area! Even the parts that were supposed to be set in the Paris Orly Airport were actually filmed at O’Hare International Airport. The interior of the plane was a set built on a basketball court at the local high school. In fact, the scene where Kevin McCallister is trekking through the flooded basement is actually the school’s swimming pool.

Production

The iconic movie house from Home Alone, at 671 Lincoln Ave., in suburban Winnetka, is still standing today. While it's not currently for sale, according to Zillow, it last sold in 2012, for $1.5 million.
